DIRECTIONS: 

 

LEAVING ORT AIRPORT

Follow the overhead signs showing R24 JOHANNESBURG together with R21 PRETORIA within the airport area. As you leave the airport, the overhead and roadside signs become R24 JOHANNESBURG together with N3 PRETORIA. Follow them.

 

ON THE R24

Shortly after leaving JIA airport the first roadside sign is R24 JOHANESBURG 14 KM. Carry on, on the R24, which is a dual carriage highway till you see signs as follows: N3 N12 M2 JOHANNESBURG together with R24 JOHANNESBURG.

 

VERY IMPORTANT- as you start seeing the M2 JOHANNESBURG signs move into the left most lane as you will bear left shortly. KEEP LEFT. You are approaching the Gillooly's interchange where you will get onto the N3 for a short while to connect to the M2.
Follow the M2 JOHANNESBURG SLAVISHLY!!! AND IGNORE ALL THE OTHERS!

 

ON THE N3

After bearing left from the R24 onto the N3 you will start climbing a hill. The first off ramp will be M52 VAN BUUREN RD - ignore it. You will know you are on the right road though!
You will be approaching another interchange where the M2 splits off the N3 You want to stay left to middle on the road, as you are going to take the M2-GERMISTON-JOHANNESBURG which again splits to M2-GERMISTON which goes off to the left, and the M2 WEST JOHANNESBURG which loops to the right over the N3 highway to take you on the ring road around the southern side of Johannesburg.

 

So- as you top the hill the overhead signs become M2-GERMISTON-JOHANNESBURG and M2 is painted on the road surface. Keep middle to left in the road and keep your wits about you here!   Shortly- after approx 100 m the signs show another split- M2 EAST GERMISTON, M2 WEST JOHANNESBURG. Follow the M2 WEST- keep RIGHT as the road loops to the right. Another highway feeds in on your left-so watch the traffic that seems to come from nowhere!

 

ON THE M2 WEST

Keep following the M2 WEST- some landmark offramps are Heriotdale, Benrose, Cleveland. When you see these signs shown below, start moving over to the left lane. M2 CITY/STAD M2 ROODEPOORT M1 SANDTON PRETORIA.  Your most important sign to watch for now is SANDTON PRETORIA. Keep left and follow the M1 SANDTON PRETORIA. The sign will say M1 SANDTON PRETORIA 1.5 KM which is the distance to the split/turnoff. Take it and it connects over the mine dumps onto the lower deck of the motorway.

 

M1 SANDTON PRETORIA

This is a double decker motorway over the city and you are on the lower deck, traveling north. Watch for traffic feeding in from your left hand side as another motorway feeds in on your left as you enter the double decker section. Work your way over to the left lane by lane- you have plenty of time to do it in up to the Smit Street offramp. Keep going and you will see paintings on the concrete ramparts either side of the road at Wits University and the next sign is the M55 Empire Road offramp- take it.
